Patrick Mahomes has not had a top-three week in 2026. He went QB9, QB4, QB20 and QB13 before Kansas City’s bye, and the experts have adjusted: the FantasyPros consensus has him QB11 for Sunday, behind Trevor Lawrence, Jalen Hurts and Tyler Shough.
Our sheet has him sixth, and not because of his name. Our Must Starts come from a model, the projection plus the Vegas team total at quarterback, and this week the betting market moved hard toward Kansas City. The Chiefs opened as 2.5-point favorites over the Chargers and are now 8.5. They are expected to score 25.5 points; Los Angeles is expected to score 17, the fewest of any team this week.
There are reasons for that number. Justin Herbert threw for 121 yards in last week’s 23-17 home loss to Denver, and Joe Alt, Tre’ Harris, Khalil Mack and Derwin James all missed the Chargers’ Wednesday practice. A short-handed opponent that cannot keep the ball keeps handing it back.
Over 19 weeks of results, quarterbacks ranked fifth to tenth by projection on teams expected to score 25.5 or more finished in the top six 45% of the time (42 cases). The same band on teams expected to score 22 or fewer did it 18% of the time (17 cases), and the band as a whole 28%. Mahomes is seventh in Sleeper’s projection with Lamar Jackson still ranked ahead of him. With Jackson a Monitor after missing Wednesday’s practice, Mahomes is our sixth.
45% is not a sure thing. Quarterback is the hardest position on the sheet to call: over the same 19 weeks, the model’s six quarterback picks a week finished in the top six 35% of the time. Dak Prescott, the consensus QB6, sits right behind Mahomes in our ranking with a similar setting in Green Bay. What we do not buy is QB11.
