Josh Downs Is The Colts' Number One Receiver Now

Alec Pierce left Indianapolis' Week 2 loss to Kansas City in the first quarter with a heel injury — on the same foot he had surgery on this offseason. He is expected to miss multiple weeks. Michael Pittman Jr. is a Pittsburgh Steeler. What is left in that receiver room is Josh Downs, Keenan Allen and Laquon Treadwell.

Downs caught seven of nine targets for 72 yards after Pierce went out, finishing as the WR20 on the week. That is not a garbage-time line; it is what happened once he became the only established receiver on the field. Daniel Jones threw enough for Treadwell to finish WR36 in the same game, which tells you the attempts are there to support a genuine number one.

The Week 3 matchup helps. Indianapolis hosts Houston, and the Texans arrive without Nico Collins, who has a grade 1 hamstring strain and is expected to miss a second straight game. A three-point spread in a game where the visiting offense is short its best player is the kind of close, moderate-scoring script that keeps a slot receiver busy for four quarters.

The argument against starting him is that Downs has been a slot specialist whose ceiling depends on volume rather than yards, and that Keenan Allen occupies similar real estate. If Allen absorbs the underneath work, Downs is a possession receiver on a team that may not need to throw 40 times. There is also the chance Pierce returns faster than reported.

We are not waiting for that. Our sheet lists Downs as one of the twelve Must Start receivers this week, which is a claim that he finishes inside the top 12 at the position. The consensus does not have him in its top 12 — it still lists Puka Nacua, who did not play in Week 2, and Zay Flowers, who did not either. Downs will be on the field.
